The first of the final three Advocacy Bootcamp sessions featured Sue Berkowitz of SC Appleseed explaining how high-cost consumer loan products are dangerous and harmful by creating debt traps, stripping wealth away in communities and magnifying the racial wealth gap in South Carolina. Whitney Barkley with the Center for Responsible Lending also discussed how other states across the country have successfully passed laws to cap consumer loan rates at 36%.
